Lectures
01
Introduction and Physicality
We will start with opening 1-slide, 2-min talks by everyone to establish a ground level. Then we will discuss the physicality of performance and how our bodies can shape the message.
02
Building a Narrative
We will discuss narrative in both oral and written communication. We will discuss how to borrow narrative styles from non-scientific communication to meet our needs and when, and when not, to use narrative devices. We will discuss writing for journals and proposals and how they are different.
03
Visual stories
We will discuss how to present visual information with intentionality and how to decide what you want your figures to show (and how to check if they are doing the job!).
04
Expect the Unexpected
What happens when things go wrong? How do you handle the audience? We will discuss and model resilience when it comes to scientific public speaking. We will assess each other's visual figures. Slides here.
05
Bringing it all together
We will discuss principles of design as applied to talks, including all we have learned about visual presentation skills, narrative building and flow. We will assess each other's written proposals. Slides here.
06
Communication Celebration
We will get to show off our skills with short presentations to the class. We will compare what we have learned to our starting points!
